LUDHIANA: Apart from manufacturing bicycles and their spare parts, city-based Kular Industries is aware of its corporate social responsibility as well. Factory owner Gurmeet Singh Kular has been organising a football tournament for the past nine years in association with the Industrial Football Club in the fond memory of his father, the late Darshan Singh Kular.
The tournament is held every year from March 23-25. “My father expired on March 23. So we chose this date to observe his barsi. He was very fond of sports and used to play badminton a lot. I was a player of hammer throw. I sponsor this tournament every year to motivate youth towards sports and to fulfil the wish of my father,” says Gurmeet.
In this year’s tournament, 16 teams from Punjab, Haryana and Jammu participated. The winning team – Tripadhi Football Club, Patiala – bagged the prize money of Rs 31,000 while the runners-up – Pakhowal Club, Ludhiana – got Rs 21,000. A cash prize of Rs 11,000 was awarded to the best player. “Around Rs 5 lakh is the expenditure on this tournament which is sponsored by our company while the Industrial Football Club, which has about 150 members, makes all arrangements for organising this event,” adds Gurmeet.
The club was formed 16 years ago. Earlier they were organising football tournament by pooling in money, but for the last nine years, the Kular family has been organising this event. Members of the club are industrialists who have a great love for this sport, says Jagjit Singh Sarabha, president of this club.
