MUMBAI: December 3, 2011 was a special day for the specially abled employees of Gitanjali Group as Mr Mehul Choksi and top management of Gitanjali Group celebrated “International Day for the Disabled “ with the pwd employees working across its different offices in mumbai . Since 1992, the united nations’ (UN) international day of persons with disabilities is annually held on December 3. It aims to increase the understanding of the issues around disabilities and attention to the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities.
As a mark of esteem and in recognition of valued service, several especially abled employees were felicitated for their years of association and dedication towards the organisation. Gitanjali Gems presently employees close to 250 specially abled people. The employees were extremely touched by this gesture.
It’s CSR initiative called “ Saksham” aims to train and employ pwd in the field of jewelry manufacturing and diamond cutting and polishing. It will soon launch its training mannual for the benefit of other organizations interested in similar initiatives.
Mr choksi said “these employees are an assets for the organization and perform at power with other employees. Building on our experiences within the company we plan to increase the numbers of pwds employed. On a wider scale, we would like to encourage the others in the industry to look at taking similar steps”.
Gitanjali Gems Limited has won the prestigious “Best Employer” award in the national awards for the empowerment of persons with disabilities conducted by the ministry of social justice and empowerment, government of india and the ncpedp – shell helen keller award for the employment of pwd’s.”
